Good to know

Why does the file get smaller?

PNG stores every pixel exactly; JPG cleverly groups similar colours. For photos and screenshots that usually saves a lot of space.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG doesn’t support transparency, so they turn white. For logos with a transparent background, better stick with PNG.

Will I see a difference?

With photos, usually not. Very fine text or sharp edges can get slightly blurry borders in a JPG.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Converting happens in your browser – even screenshots of private chats stay on your device.
