Good to know
Do spaces count as characters?
It depends on who’s asking, so you get both numbers: with and without spaces. Essay and application guidelines usually say which one they mean.
Which limits are shown?
SMS 160 characters, Google meta description 160, X (Twitter) 280 and Instagram bio 150. Google cuts descriptions by width, so 160 is a guide.
Do emojis count as one character?
Yes – each emoji counts as one, the way you see it. For the limits, fixotter counts like the services do: X counts emojis twice, and a text message with an emoji fits only 70 characters instead of 160.
How is this different from Word?
Word counts characters in a similar way but only shows them in its word count window. Here the numbers update as you type. Word may count emojis and special characters differently.
Is my text stored?
No. Counting happens in your browser and your text is never sent.
